Hot Spot on Dog: Treatment, Causes and Prevention
A hot spot can go from a small itch to a palm-sized wound in a single afternoon. Here is how to stop it fast.
Caught it early? Scan with BeneathFur to track the spot over the next 48 hours.
What a hot spot looks like
A bright red, wet, hairless circle, usually 2 to 10 cm across, often with matted fur around the edge. The skin is warm, painful, sometimes oozes a thin yellow fluid, and smells slightly sour. Most common on the head, neck, hip and rump.
Why hot spots form
Hot spots are self-trauma wounds. Something itched (a flea bite, allergy, ear infection, anal gland issue, mat of wet fur), the dog licked or chewed at it, the skin broke down, and bacteria moved in. Warm wet weather, thick double coats and dogs that swim are higher risk.
Home treatment, step by step
- Clip the hair. Use blunt-tipped scissors or clippers to expose the wound and 1 cm of surrounding skin. Air kills hot spots.
- Clean it. Chlorhexidine 2% solution or saline, twice a day. Pat dry, never rub.
- Block licking. Elizabethan collar or recovery suit. This single step matters more than any topical.
- Soothe the itch. A thin layer of 1% hydrocortisone cream once or twice a day for up to 3 days, only if the dog cannot lick it off.
- Photograph daily. If the spot is the same size or smaller after 48 hours, continue. If bigger or oozing, see a vet.
When to see the vet (today)
- Spot larger than a credit card
- Yellow or green pus, bad smell
- Dog will not leave it alone even with a cone
- Fever, off food, lethargy
- Multiple spots appearing at once
The vet may add antibiotics, a steroid injection or a Cytopoint shot to break the itch cycle in one visit.
What not to do
- Do not cover with a bandage, hot spots need air
- Do not use human triple antibiotic ointment, dogs lick it off
- Do not use tea tree oil, it is toxic to dogs
- Do not bathe in regular shampoo, it stings the open wound
Prevention
- Year-round flea preventive (flea bites are the number one trigger)
- Dry the coat thoroughly after swimming and rain, especially under the collar
- Treat ear infections and allergies properly, not just symptomatically
- Brush thick coats weekly to prevent moisture-trapping mats
- Weekly BeneathFur scan to catch the first itchy patch
FAQ
How long does a hot spot take to heal?
With proper care, most heal in 3 to 7 days. Severe cases with antibiotics can take 2 weeks.
Are hot spots contagious?
No. They are caused by self-trauma, not a transmissible infection.
Can I use coconut oil on a hot spot?
Skip it. Hot spots need to dry out, oil traps moisture and bacteria.
