Cat Fur Loss: Causes, Patterns and Treatment
Bald patches on a cat almost always tell you something. Here is how to read the location, the pattern and the skin underneath.

Normal shedding vs hair loss
Cats shed year-round, more in spring and fall. Normal shedding leaves the coat thinner but still even. Real hair loss (alopecia) leaves bald spots, broken hairs, or visible skin and usually comes with itch, redness or scabs.

Belly, inner thighs, front legs
Classic over-grooming pattern. Often called "fur mowing": the hair is broken off short rather than falling out at the root. Causes include stress, anxiety, flea allergy and pain (especially bladder pain).
Tail base and lower back
Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common cause here. Even one flea bite can trigger it. Check for flea dirt by combing onto a wet white paper towel: red-brown specks confirm fleas.
Round bald patches on the face, ears or paws
Ringworm signature. Patches are 1 to 3 cm, often with scaly skin in the middle. Highly contagious to other pets and humans. See a vet for a culture.
Symmetrical thinning across the body
Possible hormonal cause (rare in cats, but happens with hyperthyroidism, Cushing's disease). Needs bloodwork.
Behind the ears, under the collar, between toes
Mites or yeast. Skin often looks darker and feels greasy. A skin scrape confirms.

What to check at home before the vet
- Flea comb over a wet paper towel for flea dirt
- Photograph each bald spot with a coin for scale, repeat in 1 week
- Note any new stressors: move, new pet, renovation, missing litter box routine
- List any food changes in the last 8 weeks
- Watch the cat: is the fur falling out or being licked off
When to call the vet
- Skin is red, scabbed, oozing or smells bad
- Bald patches spreading week over week
- Cat is losing weight, drinking more, or hiding
- Other pets or people in the house develop itchy red patches (ringworm)
FAQ
Why is my cat losing fur in patches?
The top causes are flea allergy, over-grooming, ringworm and skin infections. The pattern and location point to the cause.
Can stress cause cat hair loss?
Yes, very commonly. Cats redirect anxiety into grooming and can wear the fur down to bare skin, especially on the belly.
Will the fur grow back?
In most cases yes, once the underlying cause is treated. Hormonal and scarred areas may take longer or grow back a different texture.
