By the time you actually see a flea, dozens of eggs are already in your carpet. Watch for these earlier signs instead.

1. Constant scratching or biting

Especially around the base of the tail, belly and inner thighs.

2. Flea dirt

Tiny black specks in the fur. Brush some onto a damp white paper towel, if it turns reddish-brown, it's digested blood. Confirmed.

3. Red bumps or irritated skin

Often clustered on the back, near the tail.

4. Hair loss

Patchy thinning from over-grooming, especially in cats.

5. Scabs and hot spots

Allergic dermatitis from flea saliva, even a single flea can trigger it in sensitive pets.

6. Pale gums

In severe infestations, especially puppies and kittens, flea anemia turns gums pale or white. Vet visit, today.

7. You see one jump

Adult fleas are 1–3 mm, brown, and jump fast. Spotting one means there are many more.
